Stakeholders' Consultative Workshop on the Oil and Gas Sector

The Stakeholders' Consultative Workshop on the Oil and Gas Sector was held in Calabar, Cross River State, from August 4 - 6, 2008.The theme of the Workshop was: “Developing an Effective Strategy for Addressing the Challenges of Oil Spill Management in Nigeria”. The Workshop attracted participants from Government Ministries, Agencies and Parastatals, Oil Companies and various Communities in the oil-producing States of the country.

The main objective of the Workshop was to bring together major stakeholders in the Oil and Gas industry to explore ways of establishing an enduring mechanism for preventing, reporting, responding to and monitoring oil spill incidents in Nigeria. The specific objective is to identify more effective ways of collaborating with Oil Industry Operators, State Government, Host communities, Community-based Organization, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and volunteers in implementing appropriate spill response.

National Workshop on Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) Mapping for Nigeria

The National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) in collaboration with International Maritime Organisation (IMO), International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association (IPIECA) and Global Initiative for West and Central Africa (GI WACAF) organized a three-day workshop on Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) mapping for Nigeria from Tuesday 28th to Thursday 30th October 2008 at Kano Hall, Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.
The aim of the workshop was to create the enabling environment where stakeholders would contribute meaningfully towards the realization of the following specific objectives.
- Review of the draft document in a manner that is acceptable to all.
- Enrich the development of the ESI map suitable to conduct risk-based assessment of oil spill incidents.
- Appreciation of the variable contents of the ecosystem and the best way to deal with issues of pollution in special areas.
